ALMA

2017
Single channel video: 9 minutes 37 seconds

This non-narrative short film tracks the movement of a flock of women through a megalithic landscape. The soundtrack weaves together their breath and humming with sounds collected from the landscape: wind, Rattlesnake grass and their hands rubbing against stone. The use of movement—gestures that come from both work and dance—evoke the strange overlap between labor and ritual, calling to mind the physical processes McKenna uses to create her photographic rubbings. This film began as a response to the physicality of daily life as a new mother and the rhythm of these acts; the relentless repetition of parenting, working, and tending the world with our bodies. Alma offers itself as a companion piece to McKenna’s photographic work, a glimpse into the same world from which her photographic artifacts and installations arise.
